Construction began in 1873 and was completed in 1876. This imposing six-story building, named in honor of the Jubilee Singers, was designed by architect Steven D. Through the efforts of Fisk's Jubilee Singers–who introduced Negro spirituals to the world beyond the South–funds were raised to relocate the school on more than forty acres of land in North Nashville.įunds raised by the Jubilee Singers during an 1871-74 international concert tour were used to construct the school's first permanent building, Jubilee Hall. At the time, the campus's only buildings consisted of small, wooden hospital barracks originally built to serve Union soldiers who occupied Nashville during and after the Civil War.īy the early 1870s the wooden barracks were insufficient to serve the population of African Americans who wished to be educated at Fisk School.

Not a very cheerful thought on your way to bed.Fisk Free School opened its doors in January 1866 in Nashville near what is today the site of Union Station. The bricks commemorating the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer looked a little bit sad where they were cemented into the walls, reminding all that hop[es can be cruelly eroded over the year, until dashed in a sudden moment of final tragedy. I did enjoy the conveyor belt toaster though which was the most exciting thing about staying there. The lack of a bin in my room felt strange and when I arrived no-one had put bedding on my bed, leaving me with a bare plastic covered mattress (it was soon rectified after I informed the staff, so points recovered for service)īreakfast was basic and lacking in there being only one cup of coffee per person in our group.
The room was clean but no en-suite and I had to tramp upstairs for the toilet and shower. It was much as one might expect from an outdoor education establishment, lots of teenagers around (all well behaved) with a basic adult accommodation block away from the main building. I was here for overnight accommodation during a conference. I pray that it gets taken down or something as it is simply unacceptable to stay at a place like this and then they have the audacity to charge £200 for a couple of nights in a pseudo trap house. Words cannot describe how awful this place was. The bread provided was so hard my jaws were saw after eating it, and the provisions for lunch was distributed with minimal hygiene. The commons room had a hockey table with no puck and the "juice" literally felt like poison. They also have a very disturbing patronising thing about them, making us to sing nursery rhymes at a camp fire and telling us ghost stories as if we aren't going to university the following year. As for the teachers god forbid me meeting them again. The WiFi was so unbelievably bad I can't even believe they bothered having it up. The rooms were often either too hot or too cold.
The bunk beds were way too small, you couldn't sit up on the bottom bunk without getting brain damage. This was the worst experience I have ever had on a trip the food was so awful I would have starved myself had I not brought in snacks myself.
